Antique Early VICTOR Type 6 VI Phonograph Talking Machine

Description

Here is an antique Victor 6 mahogany phonograph base with gold plated tone arm and ornaments in original as found condition , as pictured, without the horn. This is an early Victor 6, as the name plate shows “6” instead of the more familiar “VI”, and the serial number 5478 matches the paper label on underside of the cabinet. This machine is housed in a slightly smaller mahogany cabinet ( 15.5” x 15.5”) than typical later models measuring at 16” square, with a different winding and hinge configuration. The powerful triple spring motor has been cleaned and lubricated; is nickel plated and powers through a record easily but with some noticeable motor noise, though it can’t be heard while playing a record. The green wool turntable felt has been been replaced as the original was in tatters and the spindle cap has been replaced as this machine was found with a makeshift cap from an old repair. The cabinet finish is untouched original finish, worn thin evenly all around, with no re varnishing or refinishing . No damage except or a small nick in top right hand corner. The gold plating is still bright in most areas but shows wear most noticeably on the back of the elbow and on the reproducer housing and the brake mechanism (this appears to be repainted gold), as seen in photos. The tone arm is in good shape and the unit is equipped with an Exhibition reproducer with new gaskets. The back bracket paint is all original with its bright gold stenciling. With mild age associated wear as pictured. Overall, this is in nice condition , could be excellent with new gold plating but will leave that decision to new owner.
