    Description

Circa 1870s - here's a lovely vulcanite cameo brooch.  It features a lady with leaves adorning her head.   It measures 2 inches in length by 1 1/2 across. It has a c-clasp closure.
These pieces were not always for mourning, they were worn as simple adornments as well.
Vulcanite was invented in 1843 by Thomas Hancock.  It was the combination of heated sap from Ficus or Euphorbia trees out of Malaysia which was combined with sulphur.  Most jewelry made of this material was molded and not carved.
    It's in very good condition.
A lovely piece to add to one's Victorian jewelry collection.
